BURNOUT & PEOPLE-PLEASING THERAPY IN PETERBOROUGH & VIRTUALLY ACROSS ONTARIO
You're allowed to stop being everything for everyone.
You're the reliable one. You show up, get things done, and make sure everyone else is okay. But somewhere along the way, looking after everyone else became second nature, and looking after yourself started to feel selfish.
Therapy can help you understand why you're carrying so much, get more comfortable with boundaries, and figure out what you need beyond keeping everyone else happy.
You're exhausted, but slowing down feels wrong.
It's not just that you have too much to do. It's that you feel responsible for making sure everything gets done, everyone is happy, and nobody is disappointed in you.
Maybe you:
Say yes when you really want to say no.
Feel guilty when you rest, even when you're exhausted.
Spend too much time worrying about how other people perceive you.
Hold yourself to standards you'd never expect from anyone else.
Avoid difficult conversations because you don't want to upset anyone.
Feel responsible for other people's moods, reactions, or problems.
Keep pushing until you're completely drained, then wonder why you can't keep up.
People-pleasing often develops for a reason. Keeping others happy, getting things right, or being the person everyone can count on might have helped you feel secure, valued, or accepted.
But when your worth becomes tied to how much you do for others, it can be difficult to know where their needs end and yours begin.
Therapy is an opportunity to get curious about those patterns without judging yourself for having them. We'll explore what makes it hard to set boundaries, why rest might bring up guilt, and what it would look like to make decisions based on your own needs and values, too.
You don't have to become “selfish” or stop caring about people. You can care about others without abandoning yourself in the process.
Being the dependable one shouldn't have to cost you so much.

What we can work on together
-
Explore the expectations, responsibilities, and habits that leave you running on empty, and identify what needs to change.
-
Understand why saying no can feel so uncomfortable and practise communicating your needs without taking responsibility for everyone's reaction.
-
Look at the pressure you put on yourself to get everything right, be productive, or meet standards that leave little room for being human.
-
Explore how much of your confidence depends on being useful, successful, liked, or needed by other people.
-
Work through the discomfort that can come with slowing down, doing less, or making time for yourself without feeling like you need to earn it.
What is therapy for burnout and people-pleasing like?
We'll look at the patterns that show up in your everyday life, whether that's agreeing to things you don't have the capacity for, feeling responsible for keeping the peace, or struggling to switch off when there's still something you could be doing.
My approach is collaborative, person-centred, and trauma-informed. We'll explore where these patterns may have come from, what keeps them going, and how you might begin responding to yourself and others differently.
This isn't about giving you another list of things to do better. It's about understanding why things have become so exhausting and making room for a different way of living.
A few questions you might have
-
Burnout can look like persistent exhaustion, feeling detached or irritable, struggling to concentrate, or finding that responsibilities you once managed feel increasingly difficult.
These experiences can have different causes, and therapy can help you explore what's contributing to how you feel.
-
Guilt may still show up when you start doing things differently, especially if you're used to putting others first. Therapy can help you understand that discomfort and practise making choices that take your own needs into account.
-
When you've spent a long time focusing on other people, it can be difficult to identify your own preferences and priorities. We can start small, exploring what matters to you and what you want more or less of in your life.
