EMOTIONAL REGULATION & ANGER THERAPY IN PETERBOROUGH & VIRTUALLY ACROSS ONTARIO
You don't want to react that way. So why does it keep happening?
Maybe your frustration goes from zero to one hundred before you have time to catch it. Maybe you shut down when things get uncomfortable, snap at people you care about, or struggle to explain what's going on until it's already come out the wrong way.
Therapy can help you understand your emotional reactions, recognize what happens before you reach your limit, and find ways to respond that feel more in line with who you want to be.
It's not always about what happened in the moment.
Sometimes it's a small comment that sets you off. Sometimes it's one more thing added to an already overwhelming day. And sometimes you can't explain why you're so frustrated until you've had time to cool down.
You might:
Get irritated over things that wouldn't normally bother you.
Feel your frustration building until you snap or say something you regret.
Shut down or withdraw when conversations become uncomfortable.
Struggle to explain what you're feeling until it comes out as anger.
Find it difficult to calm down once you're upset.
Avoid difficult conversations because you don't know how you'll react.
Feel guilty afterwards and promise yourself you'll handle things differently next time.
Emotions can be difficult to navigate, especially when they build quickly or feel bigger than the situation in front of you.
Anger can sometimes show up alongside stress, hurt, fear, disappointment, or feeling misunderstood. Shutting down can also be a response to feeling overwhelmed. Understanding what's happening beneath the surface can help you recognize what you need before things reach a breaking point.
Therapy isn't about getting rid of anger or expecting yourself to stay calm all the time. It's about learning to recognize your emotions, understand what influences your reactions, and make choices about how you respond.
You can feel frustrated without taking it out on someone. You can have a difficult conversation without shutting down. And you can learn from a reaction without getting stuck in shame about it.
Understanding your reactions is where change can begin.

What we can explore together
-
Explore what tends to trigger your anger, how it builds, and what makes it difficult to manage in the moment.
-
Identify the thoughts, physical sensations, situations, and unmet needs that may show up before you become overwhelmed.
-
Develop ways to navigate uncomfortable emotions and stressful situations without immediately reacting, withdrawing, or avoiding them.
-
Work on expressing what you're feeling, navigating conflict, and responding to difficult conversations in ways that reflect the relationships you want to have.
-
Understand what happens after a difficult reaction and learn to take responsibility for your actions without getting caught in a cycle of shame and self-blame.
What is therapy for emotional regulation like?
We'll look at what happens before, during, and after the moments you find difficult. That might mean exploring situations that tend to set you off, noticing how stress affects your patience, or understanding why certain conversations feel so uncomfortable.
My approach is collaborative, person-centred, and trauma-informed. We'll work together to understand your experiences and identify practical ways to manage difficult emotions and communicate more effectively.
You don't have to be perfectly calm or explain everything clearly in session. We can start with what you know about your reactions now and build from there.
A few questions you might have
-
Not at all. Emotional regulation can be relevant if you experience intense anxiety, become overwhelmed easily, struggle to express your feelings, or tend to shut down when situations become difficult.
-
Our closest relationships can bring up strong emotions, especially when stress, expectations, or recurring disagreements are involved. Therapy can help you understand those patterns and work towards responding differently.
-
No. Anger can be a useful signal that something feels unfair, frustrating, or important to you. The goal is to understand that emotion and choose how to act on it, rather than having the reaction make the decision for you.
